We sat down with couple Abby Zipagan-Batac and Gonzo Batac to ask them to shed some light for us on what their non-traditional wedding was like and to share any advice they have for couples in the process of planning their dream wedding.
Here’s what they had to say:
- What was your wedding inspiration?
Gonzo and I are both non-traditional and minimalists and we wanted our wedding to show that. Even as a couple, we prefer to choose what most people DO NOT go for. For example, most weddings are big on flowers; I’m not, so we had very few flowers. It was mostly foliage (greens) and geometric pieces. Another example is the table linen – it’s usually white but we opted for black.

- Are there any special or unique touches you have incorporated into your wedding day?
A lot! We went for black and green (instead of the usual green and white), we had mismatched dresses from the bridesmaids, our moms wore pantsuits instead of long gowns with a lot of beadwork, we had groomswomen and bridesmen (: I didn’t have a veil blusher to cover my face. It was more about us as a couple, what we were comfortable with, and how we are individually.

- Tell us about some of your favorite wedding details and how you came up with them
It’s so hard to select a few since we really thought of each detail so we love the entire wedding! But let me try — First on the list would be our our monogram which my husband, Gonzo, designed. He made it an ambigram with an infinity sign. Second would be our date – 8.18.18 – full of infinity signs which is a personal favorite. It’s actually the first thing we decided on when we got engaged. Third would be all the black accents which was unique and made the entire look unique. Fourth would be the “Enter Sandman” by Metallica song that played as we made our grand entrance at the reception. It was super unconventional – not sweet or mushy at all! Finally, for the fifth, another would be our cake which is also uncommon for wedding cakes – it wasn’t white, it wasn’t tiered, it didn’t look like a typical wedding cake. All these things, and the entire wedding, we thought of and decided on very carefully.

- Why did you choose Naked Patisserie as your wedding cake supplier?
We did a lot of research on the different wedding cake suppliers and tried to meet with each one at bridal fairs. Naked Patisserie’s samples tasted good and the price was very reasonable. It was challenging to find a cake supplier that did macarons. The fact that Naked Patisserie was able and willing to accommodate our preferences was a big deciding factor!

- How was it working with the Naked Patisserie Team?
It was such a breeeze. The Naked Patisserie staff was very easy to talk to. They were willing to make design adjustments based on our comments and pegs which we really appreciated.
6. Why did you choose a Macaron Tower Wedding Cake instead of a traditional wedding cake?
Like I said, we are non-traditional so we don’t want something you see all the time. But, we don’t want something weird either…In our case, we wanted to serve [the wedding cake] to all so we had the macarons for the guests, and the cake was for us and our families to enjoy at home.

7. What ended up being your favorite part of the day?
We don’t think it’s possible to specify a single part – everything was perfect for us on that day. Even the weather cooperated! It was everything – the whole wedding itself. We put so much time and effort and had lots of arguments before getting to that day so for us, it’s very fulfilling as well.

8. What advice would you give to future couples for their wedding?
Make sure your wedding is about you as a couple, not what other people tell you to do or what you see as beautiful from other weddings. It can be overwhelming to see all the different weddings especially on social media but ultimately, you have to decide what works best for your personality…In the end, it will turn out perfectly because it’s how you want it to be.
